Diving Into the New; Revisiting the Old With Love

Last Saturday I participated in an Indoor Rowing Regatta at Berkeley High School. I was on a 4-person relay team. I’ve never done anything like this before. Since July of last year, I have been taking an indoor rowing class once or twice a week, at least when my body has cooperated.
When our teacher suggested that we give the competition a try, I was at first skeptical. But then the energy of my classmates and my husband got me thinking that maybe I could give it a try.
I am happy to report that our team did pretty well, no one got hurt, and it was a fun experience to be in the same room with so many young, energetic rowers. I am also happy to report that I am getting stronger and faster. It’s a good feeling.
When I was in my 20s, I took periodic modern dance classes at Shawl Anderson Dance Studio in Berkeley. This past year, I discovered a class at this same studio entitled “Adult Modern for Older & Returning Movers.” I was nervous to try it because it has been a very long time since I’ve taken a modern dance class. But I did and discovered a wonderful teacher and a class filled with encouraging and beautiful dancers. It is challenging to learn the dance sequences, and I also know it is great for my brain and body.
When I try new things, I find it opens me up to the possibility of trying other new things. I also think it requires leaning into love. I know that sounds corny. I also know that if I am open and have love in my heart, I am more forgiving of myself as a beginner and more tolerant of my teachers and compatriots.
These are challenging times that require each of us to share love and compassion. When we are troubled, generosity of spirit and actions provide a balm.
May this Black History month, Chinese New Year’s Year of the Horse, Valentine’s Day, and Mardi Gras provide you with ample ways to celebrate something new and something old.
